Being a company that cherishes tradition, it’s not often that Rolex introduces a brand new collection, but when they do, the hype reverberates throughout the watch world. In 2012, the brand new Rolex Sky-Dweller collection was presented at Baselworld to great excitement. One of the most technically advanced watches ever produced by Rolex, as well as one of the largest, the Rolex Sky-Dweller is a timepiece that commands attention. Developed and exquisitely manufactured with the sophisticated traveler in mind, the Sky-Dweller is perfectly suited for the globetrotter.
As Rolex’s newest collection, the Sky-Dweller boasts some impressive technical attributes along with 14 patents. Driving the watch is the proprietary Rolex Caliber 9001 automatic mechanical movement, one of the Swiss watchmaker’s most complex. In addition to its dual time zone display, the Sky-Dweller also features a Saros annual calendar function, named in honor of the saros cycle used to predict lunar and solar eclipses. With only four extra gear wheels within the movement, the Rolex Sky-Dweller can correctly distinguish between 30-day and 31-day months, meaning the watch only needs an adjustment once a year in February. The rectangular windows on the outer rim of the dial show red depending on the month of year and the famed Cyclops lens magnifies the date window at 3 o’clock. The wearer’s local time is indicated by the traditional center hour, minute, and seconds hands, while the home time is shown via the 24-hour marked off-centered disc. Even more notable is that the trio of practical functions is controlled by the aptly named Ring Command bezel, making the mechanically masterful watch very easy to operate.
Only for the most discerning of travelers, the Rolex Sky-Dweller is exclusively crafted in yellow, white, or Everose pink 18k gold. The 42mm Oyster case is equipped with a Twinlock screw-down crown guaranteeing waterproofness to 100 meters (330 feet) and topped with a fluted Ring Command bezel for a classic Rolex style. Although the dynamic dial is packed with information, it is designed in a way that is balanced and easy to read. The Sky-Dweller is presented on either a full gold Oyster bracelet or leather strap.
Being one of the priciest among Rolex’s luxury watches, the Sky-Dweller is certainly a hefty investment, however, a pre-owned Rolex Sky-Dweller offers the same prestige, but at a much better value. Used Sky-Dweller options include all of the collection’s different models in yellow, white, and pink gold.
