Rolex Explorer – The Adventurer’s Watch

Infused with an adventurer’s spirit, the Explorer was built to be robust enough to withstand harsh elements and remain legible even during the most extreme conditions. The Rolex Explorer was one of the first among Rolex’s line of tool watches made specifically for professionals in different fields.

Explorer

With clean and simple lines, the Rolex Explorer was always intended to be a tough and precise timekeeping instrument. Its black dial is set with luminescent hour-markers and hands for legibility in dark environments and sports the characteristic numerals at 3, 6, and 9 o’clock. The Explorer’s Oyster case is outfitted with the Twinlock screw-down crown for waterproofness to 100 meters (330 feet) and in 2010 the case was increased from 36mm to 39mm. In 2016, the brand took further steps to enhance the Explorer by lengthening and widening the hands, in addition to making the 3, 6, and 9 numerals luminescent as well.

Explorer II

In 1971 Rolex took the spirit of the original Explorer watch one step further with the introduction of the Explorer II collection. When released, the Rolex Explorer II watch had an Oyster case that measured 40mm and came equipped with added functions such as the date window at 3 o’clock and a 24-hour hand pointing to a 24-hour marked bezel to differentiate between day and night hours — a particularly useful feature for adventurers who find themselves in situations where using sunlight as guidance is not an option. On the Explorer II’s 40th anniversary in 2011, Rolex redesigned the tool watch by increasing its size to 42mm, tweaked the dial design to improve legibility, made the center hands larger, and enlarged the iconic orange 24-hour hand. The result was a very sporty and modern looking Explorer II watch that looks just as good with a white dial as it does with a black dial.

Buying Pre-Owned Rolex Explorer Watches

An advantage of shopping for pre-owned Rolex Explorer or Rolex Explorer II watches include a wider selection of models ranging from vintage and discontinued watches to the most current editions of the Explorer collection. Plus, the prices offered in the Rolex secondary market make it much more affordable to own the adventurous Explorer watch.
