OMEGA Speedmaster – The Space Watch

Introduced in 1957, the OMEGA Speedmaster began its life as a chronograph developed and built for racecar drivers. The original Speedmaster reference 2915 was the first chronograph watch ever to bear the trio of registers at 3, 6, and 9 o’clock, as well as the tachymeter scale engraved on the steel bezel, and both these design elements have now become the standards in chronograph blueprints. Over the course of its history, the OMEGA Speedmaster underwent several design enhancements from central hand changes to bezel modifications to caliber replacements to case alterations. But the most important milestone in the OMEGA Speedmaster’s history was changing its path from an auto racer watch to becoming an integral part of humankind’s story — space exploration.

The Moonwatch

In 1965, NASA qualified the OMEGA Speedmaster for its piloted missions and in the same year, OMEGA made a clear division between the Speedmaster line with a round case and the Speedmaster Professional line with an asymmetrical case equipped with crown guards that was introduced two years prior in 1963. Since spring of 1965, the OMEGA Speedmaster has the distinction of being the only watch used in each of NASA’s piloted space mission including the historic lunar landing in 1969. When Buzz Aldrin took his momentous steps on the lunar surface, he has the OMEGA Speedmaster Professional strapped on the exterior of his space suit and the legendary OMEGA chronograph has been known as the Moonwatch since then.

To honor the incredible relationship OMEGA has with NASA, space exploration, and the moon, the brand has created iconic Speedmaster editions such as Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional, Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon, Speedmaster Grey Side of the Moon, Speedmaster White Side of the Moon, and Speedmaster First OMEGA in Space.

Hand-Wound Caliber

The original 1957 OMEGA Speedmaster was equipped with the Caliber 321 hand-wound mechanical chronograph movement, which was eventually replaced by the tougher Caliber 861 in 1968. The Caliber 1861 found in today’s OMEGA Speedmaster Moonwatch is essentially the same manual winding movement that powered the OMEGA Speedmaster chronos that traveled to the moon so many years ago.
