In 1833 Antoine LeCoultre established a watch atelier in Le Sentier, Switzerland and 33 years later in 1866, Antoine and his son Elie founded LeCoultre & Cie. The region’s first manufacture quickly became known as the “Grande Maison of the Vallée de Joux”. Having one central location allowed the company to maximize efficiency in production and by 1900, they produced over 350 different calibers. The next milestone in the company’s history came about when Parisian watchmaker Edmond Jaeger challenged Swiss watchmakers to manufacture the ultra-thin movements he’d invented. Antoine’s grandson, Jacques-David, rose to the challenge and invented the thinnest movement in the world in 1907 — the LeCoultre Caliber 145 measuring a mere 1.38 mm thick. Edmond and Jacque-David eventually started Jaeger-LeCoultre in 1937. Today, Jaeger-LeCoultre is one of the most respected manufactures of luxury Swiss timepieces.
