After a decade of training as a watchmaker’s apprentice, Abraham-Louis Breguet set up his own business in Paris in 1755; today, Breguet is one of the three oldest surviving watchmakers in the world.
Officially a part of the Swatch Group, the brand’s manufacturing facilities have now moved to Switzerland. Easily one of the most recognizable watches in the world, Breguet watches are characterized by guilloché dials, cases with coin-edged appearances and what are now commonly called Breguet hands.Read less Read more
An Amazing History
Breguet’s introduction at court soon led to interest and patronage from the nobility, and he went on to design many exclusive creations for the elite members of society across the military, diplomatic, financial and scientific fields. Among this esteemed clientele were Queen Marie Antoinette, Louis, Napoleon Bonaparte, Queen Victoria, and Sir Winston Churchill. By commission from the Queen of Naples, Breguet created the first ever wristwatch in horology history in 1810. This watch served as the inspiration for the contemporary ladies watch which is known throughout the world – the Reine de Naples.
The brand itself also saw tremendous innovations in-house that placed them at the pinnacle of the watchmaking world; in fact, many of the greatest developments in horology can be laid at their door. These include perpetuelles (otherwise known as self-winding watches), the perpetual calendar, and the equation of time and calendar (which today has been improved to the extent that both functions are perpetual and self-correcting over a timeframe of more than two centuries). The most notable invention in watchmaking history is the tourbillon, which was created by Abraham-Louis Breguet himself. Considered one of the finest complications in the world, this creation was a legendary milestone in the brand’s history.
In the contemporary world, Breguet is one of the holy grails when it comes to unbeatable elegance and function, with a good dash of high fashion. It’s also one of the few watchmakers that use both manual and automatic movements in their watches. Men and women around the world looking for utter perfection find their desires in the brand’s exquisite collections – the Classique, Classique Complications, Marine, Heritage, Type XX/XXI/XXII, La Tradition, Reine de Naples, and the high jewelry watches.
