Under The Cover: The Two Tone Tudor Black Bay - Chronoexpert

This is not your father’s two-toned ‘80s watch; the two-tone Tudor Black Bay G&S (gold and steel) is back with a vengeance.

Be prepared to fall in love with the two-tone Tudor Black Bay Gold & Steel.

This watch is very 2019, with a modern take on an ‘80s classic design, with a 41 mm stainless steel case complemented by a gold bezel and crown.

The gold on this watch is “gold-fill”, which means that it is a thicker, more scratch-resistant, wear-proof layer of gold. The two-tone effect is carried into the bracelet, and the style is known in the Tudor world as the S&G version.

About Tudor

Montres Tudor SA was registered as a company in 1926 by Hans Wilsdorf, the founder of Rolex, who wanted to create a separate, more affordable line. Over time, Tudor watches have become famous for their tool watches, specifically for the military and professional divers. The Tudor Submariner was standard issue for several navy fleets around the world between 1960 and 1980.

About Black Bay

As of 2009, the Tudor brand was re-launched with completely new product lines. One of these product lines is the Heritage, which was inspired by the 1970 Tudor Montecarlo version. In 2012, the Tudor Heritage Black Bay was launched, inspired by the early Tudor Submariners. The Black Bay won the “revival” prize at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Geneve in 2013, and an icon was born.

Tudor’s Black Bay model blends traditional with contemporary, going beyond a simple re-hash of a classic style. The Black Bay is available in several versions in addition to the steel and gold including all steel, dark, bronze, and more. A classic characteristic of the Black Bay is the bracelet, which features exposed rivet heads attaching the links.

Movement

Tudor has included the Manufacture Calibre MT5813 self-winding mechanical movement on the Black Bay Gold & Steel chronograph model. With a power reserve of around 70 hours, the MT5813 is made for Tudor by Breitling and is based on their Breitling B01 movement. The MT5813 has a reputation for being the highest spec Swiss-made chronograph for the cost on the market today.

The 70-hour power reserve on the MT5913 means it will run for about three days when fully wound. The mechanism is resistant to magnetism and temperature changes.

The Tudor Black Bay Gold & Steel is also waterproof to 600 feet (200 m). The bezel features a tachymeter and the dial includes a 60-minute and a 45-minute timer function as well as the date displayed in the 6 o’clock position.

The Tudor Black Bay 41 S&G model includes the Calibre 2824 self-winding movement, which has approximately 38 hours of reserved power. While this movement is found in many brands of Swiss-made watches, Tudor has modified it to fit their standards. These modifications include subtle changes in the mechanics of the movement to make it more reliable.

Appearance

Tudor has dressed up the standard steel tool-style of the Black Bay by adding gold on the crown, pushers, bezel, and center links in the bracelet. The pop of gold on the Tudor Black Bay Gold & Steel really makes the watch unique. If you want a different look, Tudor supplies a fabric strap with this model as they have done for years with all their watches.

The two-tone gold and steel is subtle and balances nicely with the black dial and bezel, which gives the Tudor Black Bay G&S a sophisticated look.

As the Black Bay was designed as a diver’s watch, the appearance is technical and sporty. The two-tone version dresses up the Black Bay enough that it is perfectly at home in the boardroom, on a boat, or on the golf course.

Overall, the look of the Tudor Black Bay S&G is sporty and masculine with a touch of flash. Larger than it’s big brother Rolex Submariner, the Black Bay has a 41 mm case and a box style domed sapphire crystal.

The luminous hands are the classic Tudor snowflake style, and the dial has gold second markers and white dots for the hour markers.

Worn by

Tudor’s new Born to Dare campaign features sports icon David Beckham, who wears the Tudor Black Bay Bronze. Musician and actress Lady Gaga is also a fan of the Black Bay, often sporting the Black Bay 36 model. The dramatic, sexy Tudor Black Bay Dark version was created for and is worn by the New Zealand All Blacks rugby team.

It has been sung, “Everything old is new again,” and while the Tudor Black Bay Gold & Steel may be a trendy nod to ‘80s style, it is an understated and elegant version that stands up to today’s fashion.

This watch is the perfect piece to learn to love the Tudor brand and is unique enough to become a cherished part of any watch collection.

It is no surprise that the Tudor Heritage Black Bay is the most successful and best selling Tudor model in the United States.
