One cannot think of the Montblanc Heritage Spirit without thinking of sophistication. The Montblanc name is associated not only with fine timepieces but also with fine writing instruments. It’s rare to find a company that can excel in both fountain pens and chronometers, but Montblanc succeeds.
The Montblanc Heritage Spirit collection is elegant, competitively priced, and a quintessential dress watch.
As a company, Montblanc has been around for over 100 years, originally founded in 1906. They first made their name as makers of some of the finest fountain pens available. Most notable among these was the Montblanc Meisterstück fountain pen, which was first launched in 1924. This famous fountain pen has continued to be a success and synonymous with quality in the world of fine writing instruments.
While Montblanc is long established in as a maker of writing instruments, it is newer to the world of watchmakers. They began making luxury watches less than two decades ago, but in that time they have made strides to establishing themselves as a forced to be reckoned with in luxury watches.
In 2014, as a celebration of the 90th anniversary of the launch of the Montblanc Meisterstück, Montblanc decided to launch a line of dress watches named after the famous fountain pen. In 2015 these watches were renamed the Montblanc Heritage Spirit collection, and since then they have helped Montblanc continue to make its way into the world of luxury watches.
In the years since 2015 the Montblanc Heritage Spirit has continued to exemplify the trademark sophistication and craftsmanship of the Montblanc brand.
The Montblanc Heritage Spirit is, in essence, a dress watch. The face of most models is 41mm, an excellent size for a dress watch as it is noticeable without being ostentatious. Depending on which model from the Montblanc Heritage Spirit collection you select, the design of the face will differ somewhat.
However, the collection as a whole uses a Roman numeral twelve at the top of the dial, with the rest of the hour positions marked by arrow shapes matching the metal of the casing and pointing inwards towards the center of the dial. Most models have the word “Montblanc” written clearly under the 12 o’clock position, and many also have a date window at the 3 o’clock position.
One model from the larger Montblanc Heritage Spirit collection that has, in particular, made a stir is the Montblanc Heritage Spirit Orbis Terrarum. Named after the Latin term for “globe”, this is a beautiful chronograph that allows the wearer to tell the time simultaneously in all 24 time zones across the world.
Although that may sound complicated, the watch is actually easy to read. In the center of the watch face, there’s a view of the world from the viewpoint of the North Pole. Out from this, there are the names of 24 major cities– one in each time zone.
The names are in two circles, one inner and one outer, between the display of the earth and the markings of the hours, which goes up to 24 on this watch rather than the typical 12. There’s also a rotating disc that indicates in which cities it is day and in which it is night. Once the watch is set, it’s fairly simple to tell the time across the whole world.
The Montblanc Heritage Spirit is a collection made primarily of automatic watches. These hold a power reserve of approximately 38 hours and operate at a frequency of 28,800 h, with 26 jewels.
Montblanc seeks to deliver affordable luxury, and this rings true for the Heritage Spirit. Models begin around £1,130 on Chronoexpert.
