We bet you’re curious to know more about the Master Ultra Thin Moon 39 from the legendary Jaeger-LeCoultre watchmaker.

History of Jaeger – LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Moon 39

The Ultra Thin collection was inspired by the first ultra-thin watch from the brand, launched in 1907.  The ultra-thin movements from the company were manufactured by a partnership between Edmond Jaeger and Antoine LeCoultre – their collaboration prompted the company to rename itself to Jaeger-LeCoultre in 1937.

Jaeger was a famous watchmaker for the French Navy. In 1903 he invented the ultra-thin and complicated calibres and challenged Swiss watch manufacturers to develop and produce it. LeCoultre accepted the challenge and produced a compilation of ultra-thin pocket watches, as well as the world’s thinnest watch equipped with LeCoultre Calibre 145.

Jaeger – LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Moon 39 Features

Jaeger-LeCoultre produces everything in their workshop, this gives them totally control over the quality of their pieces. They treat each timepiece component to three heat treatments which prepare them to last an eternity. Following their meticulous manufacturing system, their magnificent decorated dials can take anywhere between 3 weeks to a month for the decoration to be completed.

This watch has a 39 mm transparent sapphire crystal case-back that reveals the mechanical movement and how the vibrations of the gold weight automatically wind the watch. The numberless dial is slightly curved, which gives the watch a cool 1960’s vintage look. The only decoration on the dial is the brand’s logo and the moon phase window. The clean design keeps the watch classy.

The dauphine style hands also have a design of their own. One side is sandblasted and the other one is polished. This artful conception makes the hands visible in every light, but of course not at night.

The Movement

Since 1902, Jaeger-LeCoultre has been using a set of rubies on the bridges and plates of the movement. They serve to position the gear trains on the plates and the bridges, prolong the watch’s lifetime, reduce friction and act as oil storage for lubrication. If this mechanism has been working since 1902, you can rest assured that your timepiece will keep working for a long time. So investing in a Jaeger-LeCoultre is an excellent option.

The calibre 925 is only 4.9 mm thick and it has the ‘Master Control 1000 Hours’ certification engraved in the rotor along with the manufacturer’s logo. This certificate guarantees that the watch has been tested by reproducing real life conditions for around 6 weeks – 1,000 hours. The Master Ultra Thin Moon 39 is powered by an automatic mechanical movement that contains 235 parts, offering 43-hour power reserve when fully wound.

The entire mechanism has been developed and manufactured in-house by Jaeger-LeCoultre’s artisans. All parts from the movement are decorated or circular-grained. You gotta love a timepiece that has so much effort and passion in it.

Apart from displaying hours, minutes, seconds and date, this watch also has a moon phase function. The moon phases are displayed through a circular window, with Arabic numbers, positioned at 6 o’clock. Both, the date and moon phase functions are operated through the push pieces located on both sides of the case.

Jaeger-LeCoultre recommends taking the Master Ultra Thin timepiece to service every four to five years. Also, bear in mind this is not an underwater watch, it’s ok to have small specks of water on it, but you can’t shower with this watch on. Better not to take it to that pool party. Oh, and if you’re extremely sedentary you might get some mechanical problems with the watch, remember it’s a self-winding mechanism. So if you decide to add it to your collection, you might as well start walking those daily 10,000 steps your mobile app has been nagging you about.
