There are many methods to do this, different for each type of watch. Before using any method to clean a watch lay down a clean washcloth so as to avoid scratching or damaging your watch in the process

Cleaning A Solid Gold Watch

The best method to clean a gold watch is to use toothpaste.  Any toothpaste with a non-gel formula will work for this. This is best for cleaning noticeable patches on the watch.

  • Place a small amount of toothpaste onto a cotton ball or a cleaning cloth and carefully rub the toothpaste over the spots cleaning them gently yet firmly.
  • Start by cleaning the inside of the wristband and move to the outside of the band and finally and carefully the main watch itself.
  • At the end clean the toothpaste. Dampen a clean cloth or cotton ball and go over the watch, making sure to clean all the toothpaste.

Cleaning A Gold Plated Watch

Cleaning a gold plated watch is also easy. Any of the following methods can be used to clean a gold plated watch.

  • Clean your watch with a wet cotton ball before and after every use or a damp cotton bud to clean the grooves.
  • Use toothpaste like mentioned for a solid gold watch but be careful not to scrub too harshly as it can remove the gold plating.
  • Slightly wet a soft toothbrush with soapy water and gently rub the band of gold-plated watch then wipe off the soap residue with a moist washcloth. This method is only for the band
  • Use a jewelry cleaner. Cleaners are available in the market that will clean gold plated watches and jewelry.
  • For very stubborn cases. Soak the band of your gold plated watch in ammonia solution for 1 minute only and then rinse it off with clean cloth and water.

How to Clean Your Rose Gold Watch

For a rose gold watch invest in jewelry cleaner.

Again, use something that is marketed for gold when possible, as it is unlikely you will find something for rose gold specifically.

  • Separate the watch band from the face.
  • Follow the instructions on your jewelry cleaner, paying close attention to the amount of time recommended to let the cleaner sit on the watch.
  • When time is up, rub the watch gently with the cloth to remove even more dirt. To get the best clean, use either a soft-bristled toothbrush or jewelry brush to get in-between the links.
  • Once you feel that you have gotten out all of the dirt, run a damp cloth over the watch to remove any lingering cleaner, and dry with another cloth.

You may only need to clean your watch this deeply once every few months, especially if you frequently wipe it down in between uses. When wearing your watch, try to be mindful when you apply soaps and lotions to your hands, first removing your watch when possible. This will prevent a lot of gunk from getting into your watch in the first place.
